First Week

In the first week, you must begin prospecting, in other words building a list of names of potential new members. This is the very first order of business in the Dynamic Recruitment System. In order to meet the Founders' Challenge, you are going to need to initiate 5 new men. Since not every prospect becomes a member, you need to build a Names List with more than 5 prospects on it. We suggest your goal be to build a Names List of 50 potential new members.

How are you going to get 50 names? Begin by using a Mind Jogger (pdf) exercise to get referrals from your current members. The average member can generate 50+ names with minimal effort. Ask for referrals of top undergraduates from sorority leaders, faculty members, administrators, alumni brothers, and other organization leaders. Also, consider using technology such as social media websites designed to link new friends together. In addition, here are some good sources of names:

  • Scholarship - Collect names of men who have good grades. Who are the honors students? Who has been inducted into freshman honor societies? Who do your professors and teaching assistants think are good students?

  • Character - Collect names of men who have been involved in service organizations like Rotaract and Circle K. Another great source of referrals is sororities. Ask your girlfriends to ask the members of their sororities for names of gentlemen who should be in a fraternity, but aren't.

  • Leadership - Research student government, residence hall associations, and other clubs and organizations to find out who their leaders are.

  • Teamwork - Who is playing intramural sports other than Greeks? Find the names of the winners of the residence hall leagues.

  • Service - Read your campus newspaper and figure out who is participating in community service.

  • Brotherhood - Ask the members of your chapter who they study with, who they attend class with, who they know from back home.

Are you having trouble conceptualizing a Names List. Use this sample prospect list (xls) as a starting point.
