Canadian Frater Earns Third Consecutive Victory as Premier of Manitoba

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (Canada) - Manitoba's Premier Frater Gary Doer of Zeta-Iota Chapter (University of Manitoba) has broken new ground for his New Democratic Party by winning a third straight majority government in the prairie province.

"Thank you Manitoba, for this privilege to serve you again," he told supporters at the Winnipeg Convention Centre on Tuesday night.

In addition to having representation across the province, Doer bragged about having elected 13 women.

He closed his speech with: "Let's have a beer, but we're getting back to work. We're going back to work in the Manitoba legislature."

The last party to win three straight majorities in Manitoba was Duff Roblin's Conservatives, who won their third in 1966. The NDP has never done it before.

The party is leading or elected in 38 seats, compared to 17 for the Progressive Conservatives and two for the Liberals. There are 57 seats in the Manitoba legislature. The NDP held 35 seats at dissolution. The Tories held 18, the Liberals two, with one Independent and one vacancy.

Frater Doer -- a 59-year-old one-time provincial jail guard -- easily won Concordia, the Winnipeg seat he has held since 1986. He rode a wave of personal popularity symbolized by the fact that his face dominated the party's advertising. Most of his cabinet was re-elected.

Frater Doer was initiated into the Zeta-Iota Chapter in 1969. He has two daughters, Emily and Kate, with his wife Ginny.
