Frater Merv Griffin Develops New Crossword Game Show

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Frater Merv Griffin of Gamma-Delta Chapter (University of Miami) hit it big with "Wheel of Fortune" and "Jeopardy!," both among TV's most successful and longest-running game shows ever. Now he's hoping for another hit when his syndicated "Let's Play Crosswords" rolls out Sept. 10.

"What I love about it is there are no categories. Like "Jeopardy!," it's just all over the place, covering everything from pop culture to history," says Griffin, a self-described puzzle addict who works on several every day.

The former talk show host and big-band singer says he has always been fascinated with trying to bring a crossword puzzle game show to TV.

"One day I woke up and figured out how to do it," says Griffin, 81. "Crosswords" will feature a large grid, multiple rounds and several contestants each show.

The show, distributed by Program Partners, has been picked up in 85 percent of U.S. markets. Ty Treadway (of "Soaptalk") will host.
