Boxing Titan Frater Roy Jones Jr. Stepping in the Ring

NEW YORK CITY - Frater Roy Jones Jr. (Tau-Psi, Univ. of West Florida) vs Felix Trinidad is getting some serious P.R attention with commercials already airing and a giant billboard being hung on 42nd and Broadway in Downtown Manhattan, New York promoting the bout being held at Madison Square Garden. The high-profile fight is being promoted as "Bring on the Titans" which is a fitting title as both these fighters are living legends of the ring. The fight is scheduled for January 19, on pay-per-view, and Frater Roy will be wearing trunks bearing the letters T-K-E.

The Puerto Rican superstar Trinidad, 42-2, 35 KO's, was last seen getting his head jabbed off in a 12-round decision loss to master boxer Winky Wright over 2 1\2 years ago. The 38-year-old Jones, 51-4, 38 KO's, is coming off a dominating decision win over top-30 contender Anthony Hanshaw to extend his winning streak to 2 fights after going 0-3 with two KO losses.

Trinidad who began his career at 147 Lbs. will be fighting against Jones at 175 Lbs. which will be the highest weight of his career. Trinidad's main asset has been his power throughout his career and the added weight could diminish his power. Jones's main weakness has been his suspect chin and if Trinidad's punch is not up to par he will have a long night against the superior boxer Jones. The fight is scheduled for the 12-round title fight distance despite not being a title bout.

Roy Jones Jr. was boxings' Pound for Pound king for years. He was Goliath while everyone else from Middleweight to Light Heavy was David without the slingshot. Quite frankly, Jones was unbeatable. The man was so quick and so strong that the sports fundamentals just didn't apply to his game. Jones vanquished Bernard Hopkins and James Toney in their primes and what's crazy is he made it look easy! Jones then toppled current top Light Heavyweight Clinton Woods before jumping up to Heavyweight to defeat WBA champion John Ruiz. The next chapter of Jones career wasn't well written. He narrowly defeated Antonio Tarver, granted him a rematch, and suffered arguably the worst loss of his career. Jones lost his next two fights, first to Glen Johnson then to Tarver in their rubber match before recently reviving his career with solid wins over Prince Badi Ajamu and previously undefeated Anthony Hanshaw.

All signs, and Las Vegas Betting Odds, point to a Frater Roy Jones triumph. There are just too many strikes against Trinidad for him to be victorious. Tito hasn't been in the ring since Winky Wright boxed circles around him and Jones is bigger, stronger and equally, if not more, skilled than Wright. Trinidad has never fought above 160 lbs while Jones has been fighting at 160 lbs and above since 1991. Finally, Jones has fought three times since Tito last stepped between the ropes.
