Frater Ed Moy to Release New Mexico Quarter

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - U.S. Mint director Frater Ed Moy (Lambda, Univ. of Wisconsin) said America's coins are public art that people get to see every day. He said they also can be educational -- such as coins with presidents' pictures or the program to honor each of the 50 states on the backs of quarters.

Frater Moy and Gov. Bill Richardson will launch New Mexico's quarter Monday at the state Capitol in Santa Fe. Moy also will be in Albuquerque for a coin collectors' forum open to everyone.

It's slated from 2:30-4 p.m. Sunday at the Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque. Moy said collectors want coins to be exciting.

To that end, the Mint next year plans to recreate the Augustus Saint-Gaudens' Liberty $20 gold piece on a collectible 24-karat coin. It also will produce four variations of a new penny next year to celebrate Abraham Lincoln on the bicentennial of his birth.
