Frater Selected By New Orleans Saints to Receive Top Honor

METAIRIE, La. - Former NFL kicker Morten Andersen, a 25-year veteran who played on five different teams in his career, and Frater Jerry Romig (Grand Chapter), a 40-year Saints Public Address Announcer, were honored recently by the New Orleans Saints.

The pair were awarded by the New Orleans Saints Hall of Fame, announcing Andersen had been elected as a member and that Romig was selected this year's Joe Gemelli Fleur De Lis Award winner for his contributions to the franchise.

Frater Romig, a veteran of the New Orleans media who rarely lacked composure behind a microphone, suspected this time would be different. When he first tried to speak, he choked up, then softly uttered, "I knew it."

After a few moments, Romig began, "A lot of people stop and ask me, 'How much do you get for announcing the Saints games?'

"Well I wouldn't want Tom Benson to know this, but I'd do it for nothing," Romig continued, starting to smile. "Please don't tell him, because he might take me up on that."

Andersen and Romig will be formally inducted into the Hall of Fame on Nov. 6.Andersen grew up in Copenhagen and kicked in college for Michigan State before the Saints used a fourth-round draft pick to get him.

Frater Romig, a New Orleans native, has served as the public address announcer for Saints home games since 1969. That included games in San Antonio and Baton Rouge when the team was displaced by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Romig worked at the New Orleans States and Times-Picayune newspapers as a reporter. He spent 19 years at WDSU-TV, serving as a news writer and producer before becoming vice president and program director. He also was the public address announcer for four Super Bowls, numerous Sugar Bowls and Tulane football games.

The New Orleans Saints Hall of Fame is housed in the Louisiana Superdome.

"I am so honored," Romig said. "I can't thank the Hall of Fame board enough for this honor and what it means to me."

The Offices of the Grand Chapter extend a heartfelt congratulations to Frater Jerry Romig, his son and Past Grand Prytanis Mark Romig, and the rest of the family on this great honor.
