World AIDS Day Honored by Fraters Giving to Angelwish

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – December 1^st globally is known as World HIV/ AIDS Day and the TKE Nation has been stepping up by helping those affected by this disease. Even internet giants Google and Twitter turned Red and are supporting with a red ribbon, rallying around the 33 million people living with the illness.

On 24th November 2009, UNAIDS and the WHO (World Health Organization) released its annual AIDS Epidemic Update which indicating that 33.4 million people were living with HIV in 2008, up slightly from 2007.

The higher figure is credited to increased availability to treatment allowing more people to live longer. Overall, the report shows that new infections have dropped 17 % over the past eight years. Despite areas of progress, children still account for 2.1 million of people living with HIV, although the number of deaths has declined. 

The number of children newly infected with HIV in 2008 was roughly 18% lower than in 2001.Everyone wants to contribute in raising awareness about AIDS. Here are some simple tips how one can help out the world in raising awareness against HIV.
 
1) Find out the facts about HIV and do not contribute in perpetuating myths - give right information to your friends, colleagues or relatives.

2) Get yourself tested today. Always treat an HIV positive person respectfully and never disclose others without their agreement.

3) Wear a red ribbon as a symbol of your support for everyone affected by HIV and raise awareness.

As a reminder, in an effort to ensure a happy holiday season for children and families around the world living with HIV/ AIDS, Tau Kappa Epsilon International Fraternity announced earlier this week a partnership with Angelwish. Founder and CEO Shimmy Mehta (Theta-Zeta, Rutgers Univ.) is excited to be working with TKE, an organization that gave him a solid foundation during his college years.
