Grand Prytanis visits Kansas State

Dr. Herb Songer at Alpha-Lambda ChapterMANHATTAN, KANSAS – Dr. Herbert L. Songer, Grand Prytanis visited the Alpha-Lambda chapter at Kansas State. Dr. Songer, accompanied by his wife Sheryl, was welcomed by Frater Will Crooks, Alpha-Lambda Prytanis and Frater Skipp Wefald, Alpha-Lambda Chapter Advisor. Frater Crooks led Dr. Songer on a tour of the chapter followed by pictures and formal dinner. Dr. Songer’s visit was well received by a strong showing of the Teke collegiate chapter, along with several TKE Building Association Board members and their wives. Scott Jones, Director of Greek Affairs at Kansas State University, was also in attendance.

Following dinner, Dr. Songer spoke to the chapter about current developments within TKE at the international level, including purchase of a new headquarters for the Offices of the Grand Chapter in Indianapolis. He also spoke about making the most of the time you have as a Teke and assuming leadership responsibilities. He closed by reflecting on his time in TKE, and encouraged everyone to volunteer and become a Life Loyal Teke. 

Frater Songer has been active in TKE since being initiated in the Alpha-Upsilon Chapter at Fort Hays State University in 1963, where he held the offices of Prytanis and Histor.  He has served in a variety of volunteer roles, including reactivating TKE chapters, conducting leadership workshops, and serving on TKE international committees.  Dr. Songer received a B.S. from Fort Hays State University in 1966 and an M.S. in 1969, and his Ph.D. from Kansas State University in 1987. He recently retired as Vice President for Student Affairs at Fort Hays State University where he held that position since 1995. A recipient of the Knights of Classic Lore and the Excellence in Education awards, Frater Songer previously served the Fraternity as Grand Hypophetes, starting in 2001, Grand Hegemon (2003–05),  two terms as Grand Pylortes, in 2001–03 and 2005–07, and as Grand Epiprytanis (2007–09).  He is a Life Loyal Teke. He and his wife Sheryl reside in Wichita, Kan.

Alpha-Lambda of Tau Kappa Epsilon was installed January 31, 1931 as the 35th chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon International Fraternity. The Tekes are one of 24 fraternities affiliated with Interfraternity Council of Greek Affairs at Kansas State University.  The Alpha-Lambda chapter is governed by an Executive Council consisting of eight officers and other key student leaders.
