12 Days of Christmas Deeds

12 Days of Christmas Deeds

Frater Josh BrinkINDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The holidays are a time of year when you can take a step back and give thanks for all you have. Frater Joshua Brink (IUPUI, Upsilon-Iota) is taking this one step further by attempting to do a good deed for someone in need each day before the Christmas Holiday. While the acts of kindness are simple, the impact is great.

While some are busy shopping or getting stressed about the pending family gatherings, Frater Josh is looking for those who could use a helping hand. This type of selfless action is exactly what Tau Kappa Epsilon aims to guide members towards with the “Better Men for a Better World” end statement. This, however, is not something Frater Josh wanted press over; he just wanted to make a small difference.

“Throughout my life I have tried to give back and help others whenever possible,” said Brink. “It’s just the right thing to do plain and simple. When people see you bending over backwards for others, it usually breeds similar actions. They, in essence, pay it forward.”

Two of the deeds performed over the last two weeks speak volumes of Frater Josh’s character and how he lives the ritual of TKE.

“I came home from work after the big snow storm we had and none of the sidewalks had been cleared where I live. I had a shovel and knew that others within my complex would probably appreciate clean sidewalks when walking to their cars or bus, so I shoveled a path from one end to the other. “

The second of these involved helping a stranded motorist on an exceptionally cold evening where temperatures dipped in to the lower teens and winds made it feel below zero.

“I went to the gas station to fill my gas up so I didn’t have to stop in the morning. It was around 10 PM and while I was filling up a gentleman was struggling to change a flat tire. I thought to myself ‘it's bone chillingly cold and I know how to change a flat.’ So I stopped by his car, got my lug nut remover out and proceeded to change it. The appreciation that the guy expressed was greater than any other feeling you can receive.”

He added, his Teke experience is one reason he feels compelled to do these actions. He is one of the founding fathers of the Upsilon-Iota chapter and saw creating this organization as an opportunity to give back to the community he calls home. He said the chapter has always taken it upon themselves to take advantage of every opportunity to serve others in need.

One Frater is helping to make this holiday season one of hope and joy for others. How are you spending this break in the hustle and bustle of life? Take a moment to help someone who can use the assistance. If not you, then who?
