Another Kentucky Derby, Another TKE Connection

Another Kentucky Derby, Another TKE Connection

SoldatCHURCHILL DOWNS, KY - Several carloads of Tekes from the Iota-Beta chapter (Susquehanna Univ.) are headed to the Kentucky Derby as they wrap up their final exams. They're off to cheer on "Soldat," a horse co-owned by Harvey Clarke and Craig Robertson.  Harvey Clarke, majority owner, is the father of Scott Clarke, the current prytanis of the chapter. Soldat means soldier in French and was named by Frater Scott. In addition to making the trip to Kentucky, the Tekes have shown their support by wearing hats and joining the Soldat fanpage on Facebook.

The oddsmakers have Soldat at 12-1 (as of Friday morning). Soldat comes into the Kentucky Derby as one of the most physically fit horses in the competition but is coming off a disappointing finish at the Florida Derby. History tells us that this horse will have problems because no horse has won from the 17th hole (Soldat's starting position) in the last 34 races.

However, sports competitions humble even the biggest favorites. 'Upset' wasn't supposed to beat 'Man o' War" at 100-1 odds in the 1919 Sanford Memorial race. The US wasn't supposed to beat the Soviet Union in the 1980 Olympics' "Miracle on Ice." Underdogs do get an opportunity to show what they are made of in a winner-take-all scenario. Don't be surprised if these Fraters are cheering mightily as their favorite crosses the finish line first.
