Position Description:

As a key member of the Executive Management team, the Controller/Chief Financial Officer will report to the TKE Chief Executive Officer and assume a strategic role in the overall financial management of TKE and TEF.  The CFO will have primary day-to-day responsibility for planning, implementing, managing and controlling all financial-related activities of both organizations. This will include direct responsibility for accounting, finance, forecasting, job costing, property management, deal analysis and negotiations, and partnership compliance and private and institutional financing.

Responsibilities: 

  • Provides leadership in the development for the continuous evaluation of short and long-term strategic financial objectives.
  • Ensure credibility of Finance group by providing timely and accurate analysis of budgets, financial trends and forecasts.
  • Direct and oversee all aspects of the Finance & Accounting functions of both organizations.
  • Evaluates and advises on the impact of long range planning, introduction of new programs / strategies and regulatory action.
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with senior executives so as to identify their needs and seek full range of business solutions.
  • Prepare consolidated monthly financial statements and reports for each organization, ensuring timely and accurate completion of month-end and year-end financial closing activities. 
  • Prepare monthly analysis for the endowment investments and present information on status of endowment to the Finance Committee on a quarterly basis and provides the CEO and Board of Directors advice on the financial implications of business activities. 
  • Oversight responsibility for maintenance of the general ledger.  Oversight responsibility for payroll functions, cash receipts and disbursements, monthly accruals, and allocation of costs among programs.
  • Manage processes for financial forecasting, budgets and consolidation and reporting to TKE and TEF Boards.
  • Provide recommendations to strategically enhance financial performance and business opportunities.
  • Responsible for preparation and coordination of the annual fiscal audit and program audits.  Ensure that effective internal controls are in place and ensure compliance with GAAP and applicable federal, state and local regulatory laws and rules for financial and tax reporting.  
  • Communicate with the TKE and TEF Audit Committees on a regular basis to provide timely, accurate and complete information to ensure financial integrity and transparent oversight, includes raising issues the audit committees must understand, with the context and associated risk.
  • Review of TKE chapters accounting and tax reporting.
  • Preparation of information or review of any required tax reporting at the Federal, State, or Local level.
  • Attend TKE and TEF board meetings.
  • Review of compliance with and accounting for the corpus, income, disbursements, and transfers of temporary or permanently restricted contributions or programs.
  • Reports directly to the CEO, and shall act as an independent resource for the Board of Directors, and its Committee, as assigned; overseeing internal financial reporting, audit and risk management activities with the external auditors.
  • Represent TKE / TEF in the community by attending conferences and other engagements. 
  • Provide same level of service and support to both CEOs and Boards.

Requirements:

  • BS in Accounting or Finance, MBA and/or CPA highly desirable
  • 5+ years in progressively responsible financial leadership roles,
  • 5+ years preferably in a non-profit, with multiple international location a plus
  • 5+ years in experience with associations 
  • 3+ years in management

Personal Attributes:

  • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to communicate and manage well at all levels of the organization and with staff at remote locations essential.
  • Strong problem solving and creative skills and the ability to exercise sound judgment and make decisions based on accurate and timely analyses.
  • Strong knowledge of non-profit accounting and experience with relationship of a 501 (c)3 to a 501 (c)7.
  • Knowledge and familiarity of UPMIFA and how it impacts non-profit financial management.
  • Extensive experience in fund accounting and in 990 reviews assuring accurate and timely reporting to the IRS.
  • High level of integrity and dependability with a strong sense of urgency and results-orientation.
  • Must be a team player and have a hands-on attitude.

Other Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong working knowledge of MAS90 or MIP and Excel a plus 

Organization:

TKE is proud of its long history and of its recent accomplishments.  They currently have more than 280 groups and 10,800 collegiate members across North America, with more than 258,000 total members since their founding. The organization has achieved several successes in recent years. Most notably, TKE has seen growth both in their recruitment and retention numbers for three straight years as well as dramatic increases in conference attendance.  

A 501(c) 7, TKE’s international headquarters is in Indianapolis and their staff of approximately 30 recently moved into a new facility.  The staff maintains the day-to-day operations of the TKE enterprise, including the TKE Educational Foundation, a 501(c) 3, which is a separate organization with its own President and Board of Directors.

The Fraternity’s governing body is the Grand Chapter. Primarily made up of collegiate members, the Grand Chapter meets at the biennial Conclave (International Convention) to vote on constitution and bylaw amendments and to elect the Grand Council.  The members of the Grand Council act as the Board of Directors for a two-year period.  Volunteers are critical to the Fraternity’s efforts.  

TKE continues its mission of aiding men in their mental, moral and social development for life with the stated organization purpose of contributing to the advancement of society through the personal growth of their members and service to others.  TKE is unique among fraternities in that they have had a non-exclusionary policy since their founding.  TKE aims to build Better Men for Better World.

The TKE Educational Foundation (TEF) is the 501(C)3 and has assets of nearly $6.5 million.  It is operated with a separated CEO and Staff, Board of Directors and has the following mission:  The TKE Educational Foundation’s mission is to establish and support scholarships and leadership training programs which promote academic achievement and strengthen moral, social and community values.”
