Bill Bruns Commitment to Service Scholarship

Bill Bruns was initiated at the Gamma-Kappa Chapter at Indiana University and has always had a strong and powerful commitment to service to others in the Fraternity, on campus, and in the community. Frater Bruns is a member of the TKE Chapter Advisor Hall of Fame and long-time refounding Chapter Advisor for the Beta-Chi Chapter at Southern Illinois University Carbondale and the Gamma Chapter at the University of Illinois, as well as the former Board of Advisors Chairman for his home chapter (Gamma-Kappa, Indiana University). This scholarship, established by his friends, family and fraters, recognizes the importance of community service in the development of young men.

Bruce B. Melchert Scholarship

A former member of the Board of Directors of the TKE Foundation, Bruce B. Melchert was initiated a Teke at Beta-Theta Chapter at the University of Missouri – Columbia and served as the Executive Vice President of TKE from 1960 to 1972. After leaving the staff, this Knight of Apollo was elected to the Grand Council in 1979, serving as Grand Prytanis from 1987 to 1989. He is a recipient of the Order of the Silver Maple Leaf, Grand Prytanis Award, and the Order of the Golden Eagle Award. He is a Life Loyal Teke.

This scholarship is awarded to a member displaying academic achievement with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Recipients must be a sophomore, junior or senior who exemplifies outstanding leadership within the chapter, having served as Recruitment Chair, Prytanis or in other major officer positions in the chapter. Preferred applicants are also a leader in IFC or other campus organizations. The applicant must be pursuing an undergraduate degree in political science or government and have a goal to serve people in a political or governmental service position. Preference will first be given to a member of the Beta-Theta chapter, but if there is no qualified applicant, the scholarship will be open to any other qualified Teke.

Carroll C. Hall Memorial Scholarship

A leader in the formation of the TKE Foundation, Carrol C. Hall served as a member of its Board of Directors. Frater Hall was initiated a Teke at Iota Chapter at Eureka College. He was the recipient of the Order of the Golden Eagle Award in 1987. The Directors of the Foundation established this scholarship through the Hall estate in recognition of dedication to TKE during his lifetime and his commitment to ensure the TKE experience for future members after his death.

This scholarship is awarded in recognition of academic achievement to a member with a GPA of at least 3.0 or higher and recognizes outstanding leadership within the chapter, on campus and in the community. The applicant must be pursuing an undergraduate degree in education or science and have plans to be a teacher or pursue a profession in the field of science.

Charles R. Walgreen, Jr. Leadership Award

Established by the Board of Directors of the TKE Foundation, this award recognizes the lifelong commitment of Charles R. Walgreen, Jr., as a TKE volunteer and supporter. The retired president and chairman of Walgreen Drug Company was initiated a Teke at Upsilon Chapter at the University of Michigan in 1925. He is a Past Grand Officer of TKE. He provided a start-up grant for the TKE Leadership Academy in 1990 and later provided funding to endow the program. He was honorary chairman of the Foundation’s Centennial Endowment Campaign. Frater Walgreen received the Alumnus of the Year Award (1976) and the Order of the Golden Eagle (1989), and was the first recipient of the Foundation’s Fraternity for Life Award in 1997. He was a Life Loyal Teke.

Charles R. Walgreen, Jr. Scholarship Award

This award recognizes the lifelong commitment of Charles R. Walgreen, Jr., as a TKE volunteer and supporter. Frater Walgreen was initiated at Upsilon Chapter at the University of Michigan in 1925. The Charles R. Walgreen, Jr., Scholarship Fund is available to any Teke with a GPA of 2.5 or higher. The award will be based on merit and those with the highest academic achievement. Evidence of service to the Fraternity chapter, campus community and beyond will enhance the strength of the application.

Christopher Grasso Scholarship

Christopher A. Grasso was initiated as an Honorary Teke at Alpha-Tau Chapter at Drexel University. He has served the chapter as its Chapter Advisor and continues to serve as a member of the Board of Directors. Frater Chris is a Past Grand Officer of the Fraternity. He is a Life Loyal Teke.

Donald A. & John R. Fisher Memorial Scholarship

This award recognizes the contributions of TKE’s first, and only, father and son Grand Prytanis duo. Donald A. Fisher was initiated a Teke at Omicron at Ohio State University in 1921 and served as Grand Prytanis from 1935-37. His son, John R. Fisher, was initiated a Teke at Gamma-Epsilon Chapter at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1950 and served as Grand Prytanis from 1993-95.

Frater John established this scholarship in honor of his father, Frater Don. Following Frater John’s entry into the Chapter Eternal in 2005, the family asked that this scholarship recognize both father and son.

Doris and Elmer H. Schmitz, Sr. Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship honors the mother and father of Executive Vice President Emeritus T. J. Schmitz. Elmer Schmitz, Sr., was initiated as an Honorary Teke at Iota-Omicron Chapter at the University of Wisconsin – Whitewater in 1963. The scholarship was established by their family and friends.

Dwayne R. Woerpel Memorial Scholarship

Dwayne R. Woerpel was initiated a Teke and founding member of Iota-Alpha Chapter of TKE at the University of Wisconsin – Superior in 1962. A Knight of Apollo, he served on the TKE staff in several positions, including administrator of alumni services and Foundation activity, and was instrumental in the establishment of the TKE Leadership Academy. He was also chairman of the Board and a longtime director of the TKE Foundation. Serving on the Grand Council from 1975 to 1985, he was elected Grand Prytanis in 1983. He was a recipient of the Foundation Medal of Excellence in 2000 and TKE’s Order of the Golden Eagle Award in 2001. This scholarship was established by family and friends to honor Frater Duwe’s lifelong dedication to TKE.

Eric D. Dunning Scholarship

Eric D. Dunning was initiated in the Beta-Eta Chapter at the University of Missouri – Rolla in February 1966, where he earned degrees in Engineering Management. Eric held several offices in Beta-Eta Chapter and was Co-Rush Chairman in the summer. He was a runner-up Top Teke in 1970. Eric utilized his Teke training to become very successful on campus and in industry before retiring in 2005. Eric is a Life Loyal Teke.

This scholarship is awarded in recognition of academic achievement to a member with a GPA of at least 2.75 or higher and recognizes leadership within the chapter and on campus. Recipients must  be at least a sophomore or higher pursuing a degree in engineering, computer science or any of the pure sciences (chemistry, mathematics, physics, geology, etc.). Preference will first be given to Tekes at Missouri University of Science and Technology. If there are no qualified candidates from the Beta-Eta chapter, this scholarship will be open to any Frater who meets the criteria.

Eugene C. Beach Memorial Scholarship

Eugene C. Beach served on the Grand Council from 1923-35 and was elected Grand Prytanis in 1930, serving until 1935. Initiated a Teke at Iota Chapter at Eureka College, he received the Order of the Golden Eagle Award in 1967. This scholarship was established after his death by his Fraters and friends as a lasting tribute to him for his service to TKE undergraduate members and chapters.

Father Timothy Vakoc Memorial Scholarship

Henry Timothy Vakoc, CFC, was an initiate of Theta-Rho Chapter at the St. Cloud State University. He served as Chapter Management Consultant on the TKE staff from 1983 until 1987. Frater Vakoc later served as District Vice President (now Province Advisor) and was a member of the Knights of the North. He received the Teke Alumnus of the Year Award in 2006.

Francis J. Flynn Memorial Scholarship

Frank J. Flynn was initiated a Teke at Theta-Sigma Chapter at St. John’s University in 1968, where he was a professor of mathematics. He served as Faculty Advisor, Chapter Advisor, and as the first District President (now Grand Province Advisor) for the Liberty District. He was a Grand Prytanis Key Leader Award recipient in 1975. Frater Flynn entered the Chapter Eternal in 1987, while in his second term on the Board of Directors of the TKE Foundation. His wife, Mary, a staunch supporter of TKE, continued to fund the scholarship until her death.

Gabe Anaya Scholarship

Frater Gabe Anaya was initiated in 1956 into the Alpha-Omicron Chapter of TKE (New Mexico State University). Since then, he has made many contributions to the TKE Fraternity, including serving as a Grand Province Advisor, attending many Conclaves and Regional Leadership Conferences, and helping his chapter in numerous ways, including serving as its advisor for over 40 years. He is a charter member of the TKE Chapter Advisor Hall of Fame. He received the Order of the Golden Eagle Award at Conclave in 2007, has received the Foundation Medal of Excellence Award, Grand Prytanis Award and Key Leader Award. Frater Anaya is a Life Loyal Teke.

George P. Bundy Scholarship

George W. Woolery Memorial Scholarship

George W. Woolery was initiated a Teke at Beta-Sigma Chapter at the University of Southern California in 1948. A Chapter Advisor and Board of Advisors members locally, he also volunteered at the international level, chairing the Public Relations and Expansion Committees, originating the TKE Public Service Weekend, and serving as a District President (now Grand Province Advisor). He was elected to two terms on the Grand Council and was a member of the TKE Foundation Board. Frater Woolery was a recognized author and authority on children’s TV programming and animation production. He was a recipient of the Grand Prytanis Award in 1964 and the TKE Alumnus of the Year Award in 1993.

Guarini & King Ironman Scholarship

Harry J. Donnelly Memorial Scholarship

Considered the “father” of the TKE Foundation, Harry J. Donnelly was initiated a Teke at Alpha-Kappa Chapter at the University of Pennsylvania. He served as Province Hegemon (now Grand Province Advisor), as an advisor to both Alpha-Pi and Nu-Pi Chapters, and as a member of various Fraternity committees. He was honored as a recipient of the Grand Prytanis Award in 1959, the Order of the Golden Eagle Award in 1985, and received the Foundation Fraternity for Life Award posthumously in 2000. Mrs. Ellanor “Babe” Donnelly established the scholarship in loving member of her husband for the benefit of members of Tau Kappa Epsilon.

The applicant must be pursuing an undergraduate degree in accounting or a graduate degree in law and plans to be a full-time student the following year.

International Exchange Scholarship

This scholarship was established to deepen the knowledge and foster friendships between members of Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity and members of the Weinhiem Senior Convent of the German Student Corps. A core objective would be to support exchange visits between members of both groups to the TKE Conclave in the U.S. and respectively to the Weinheimtagung in Germany to enhance inter-oganizational relationships and joint memberships. With such exchanges, greater historical and cultural understanding would be achieved, leading to personal growth and bonding between members.

The International Exchange Scholarship is open to members in good standing of either organization who are interested in building international understanding, keyed to the principals of TKE and the Corps. Applicants are required to research the other organization and to submit an essay (500-750 words) providing a concise explanation of the founding principles and member educational objectives of the Student Corps. Essays should be submitted in English.

This scholarship is awarded in recognition of academic achievement to a member with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 or higher. The applicant must be pursuing a degree in engineering, business administration or accounting. Preference will first be given to a member of the Beta-Theta Chapter, but if there is no qualified applicant, the scholarship will be open to any other qualified Teke.

J. Russel Salsbury Memorial Scholarship

J. Russel Salsbury served on the Grand Council from 1957 to 1966. In 1963, he was elected Grand Prytanis and served until his death in 1966. He was initiated a Teke at Phi Chapter at the University of Nebraska and was the recipient of the Order of the Silver Maple Leaf Award. This scholarship was established by the Fraternity as a lasting tribute to him and as a service for TKE members.

Jack & Rachel Dart Scholarship

Given to a sophomore or junior at a school in the Greater Washington DC area with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better who has demonstrated success in campus and chapter leadership and community service.

Jeff Planck Memorial Scholarship to Study Abroad

Jeff Planck was initiated a Teke at Epsilon-Omicron Chapter at the University of Houston in 1992. As a collegiate member, Jeff was a chapter leader; as an alumnus, he continued to support his home chapter in various advisory roles through the years, including as Chapter Advisor and serving on the Board of Advisors. Jeff was an avid and lifelong traveler beginning in his childhood with his parents Robert (also a Teke from E-O Chapter) and Sharron Planck. In college, he traveled abroad to Spain and Mexico City, and his experiences had a profound impact on his life. One of his greatest joys was traveling with his wife, son, and daughter. Upon Jeff’s death in 2023, this scholarship was established in his memory by his family and friends.

This scholarship is awarded to collegiate members or children of verified alumni members who are enrolled at a college or university. In either case, recipients must provide proof of current participation or approved future participation in an official study abroad program or experience. Preference will be given to members or children of members of the Epsilon-Omicron (University of Houston) Chapter. If there is no qualified applicant from Epsilon-Omicron Chapter, the scholarship will be open to collegiate members or children of alumni members of any other chapter.

John A. Courson Scholarship

A Past Grand Prytanis of the Fraternity and past chairman of the TKE Foundation, John A. Courson was initiated a Teke at Alpha-Epsilon Chapter at Monmouth College, Illinois. He received the Order of the Golden Eagle in 1989 and is a Life Loyal Teke.

This distinguished scholastic award is the highest academic honor awarded to a Teke. John C. Fitzgerald, Jr. Scholarship

A past member of the TKE Foundation Board of Directors and current member of the Foundation Investment Committee, John C. Fitzgerald began his lifelong TKE commitment as a founding father and first Prytanis of Theta-Upsilon Chapter at California State University-Sacramento. A leader in municipal finance, he is the Managing Director of Fitzgerald Public Finance dealing in municipal tax-exempt and taxable financing. He holds an MBA degree from Cornell University, is an educator and lecturer in public finance, and publisher of the Fitzgerald Report, an authoritative municipal finance newsletter. Named a Teke Alumnus of the Year in 1989, he is a Life Loyal Teke.

This scholarship is available to any collegiate member of TKE who is a sophomore or above in good standing with his university and TKE. Recipients must maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher and be pursuing a degree in Business Administration. Kenneth L. Duke, Sr. Memorial Scholarship

Kenneth L. Duke, Sr., served the Fraternity in a variety of capacities from his initiation as a Teke at Omicron-Sigma Chapter at Indiana University Southeast in 1992. In addition to serving as District President (now Grand Province Advisor) and chairman of the Board of Advisors, he handled the Fraternity’s risk management claims for a number of years. This scholarship was established by his family, friends and co-workers as a lasting tribute to Frater Duke in recognition of the deep friendship and love he had for Tau Kappa Epsilon and his fellow Tekes. He was a Life Loyal Teke.

Lenwood S. Cochran Scholarship

A Past Grand Prytanis and past chairman of the TKE Foundation, Lenwood S. Cochran was initiated a Teke at Gamma-Mu Chapter at Furman University. First serving as a Chapter Advisor, he was elected to the Grand Council in 1959, serving as Grand Prytanis from 1971-73. The Grand Knights of the Knights of Apollo, Frater Cochran is a recipient of the Order of the Golden Eagle and Foundation Medal of Excellence. He is a Life Loyal Teke.

Lon G. Justice Scholarship

Frater Justice was initiated into Pi-Alpha Chapter (Ashland University) in March of 1978. He served as Grand Prytanis from 1999 to 2001, and was on the Grand Council prior to that since 1989. He received the Order of the Golden Eagle Award (2005) and the Grand Prytanis Award (1989). He is a Life Loyal Teke and has served on numerous committees and attended many Conclaves. He is a member of the TKE Foundation Board of Directors, serving on the Board since 2003 and Chairs the Scholarship and Awards Committee.

Michael & Candy Yakimo Scholarship

Frater Yakimo was initiated into Beta-Eta Chapter at Missouri University of Science and Technology on February 7, 1965, and graduated from the University of Missouri – Columbia with an engineering degree. He went on to law school at the University of Missouri – Kansas City, graduating in 1976. Frater Yakimo is self-employed as a patent attorney in private practice in Kansas City, Missouri. Mrs. Yakimo is a member of Alpha Delta Pi and is Executive Vice President at Argus Health Systems in Kansas City, Missouri. He served in the US Army from 1967-69, including serving in Vietnam.

Michael J. Morin Scholarship

Frater Morin was initiated a Teke at Beta-Upsilon Chapter at the University of Maine – Orono in 1984. Upon graduation, he immediately embarked on a lifelong commitment to serve TKE. He served his chapter as Chapter Advisor and Board of Advisors Treasurer, and TKE as Grand Province Advisor, Education Chair and Grand Justice. He was best regarded for his leadership of the Knights of Honor at 10 Conclaves of the Grand Chapter. Honored as a Knight of Apollo, he was a Grand Prytanis Key Leader Award recipient and received the Grand Prytanis Award in 1995. This scholarship was established by family and friends of Frater Morin in a lasting tribute to his love of Tau Kappa Epsilon.

Robert D. Planck Scholarship

Robert D. Planck was a 1967 initiate of Epsilon-Omicron Chapter, University of Houston. He served on the Foundation Board and numerous committees for the Fraternity. In 1992, he was appointed to the Grand Council to fill the Grand Grammateus position, which was then open, and elected as Grand Crysophylos in 1993 and 1997, as Grand Epiprytanis in 1999, and as Grand Prytanis in 2001. Frater Planck attended many Conclaves and many other TKE events. He was Volunteer of the Month in December, 2010, was a Life Loyal Teke, Grand Prytanis Key Leader Award recipient and was named to the Order of the Golden Eagle in 2011. Frater Planck entered the Chapter Eternal in 2022.

Robert Leemon Memorial Scholarship

Established by his son, this scholarship is a lasting memory to Frater Robert Leemon’s dedication to help others and his love for the Michigan outdoors. Frater Leemon was initiated into the Grand Chapter in March of 2005 with his son Chris Leemon, Theta-Iota (Northern Michigan University) by his side. Frater Leemon was born in L’Anse, Michigan and spent his entire life in the Upper Peninsula as a proud Yooper. He graduated from Northern Michigan University in 1970 and had a career as a science teacher in Menominee, MI for 35 years.

Ronald Reagan Leadership Award

Named in honor of the 40th president of the United States, this award recognizes Frater Reagan’s dedication and loyalty to Tau Kappa Epsilon. Frater Reagan was initiated a Teke at Iota Chapter at Eureka College. He served as chairman of the Grand Prytanis Advisory Committee and offered his talents in the production of the “Fraternity for Life” film and the “Above All Else . . . TKE” recruitment video. He is a recipient of the Teke Alumnus of the Year Award and in 1984 received the Fraternity’s highest honor, the Order of the Golden Eagle Award. He was a Life Loyal Teke.

Steven J. Muir was initiated a Teke of Beta-Eta Chapter at the University of Missouri – Rolla, where he earned a B.S. degree in Ceramic Engineering. A Knight of Apollo, Muir served as Chapter Services Director on the TKE Staff. He joined the Board of Directors of the TKE Foundation in 1996, and is past chairman of the Board. He received the TKE Triangle Award in 1982, was named Alumnus of the Year in 1997, was recipient of the Foundation Fraternity for Life Award in 1999, and received the Order of the Golden Eagle in 2007. He is a Life Loyal Teke and serves on the Foundation Advisory Council.

This scholarship recognizes service to TKE by T. J. Schmitz, who was the Fraternity’s Executive Vice President/CEO from 1973 to 1993. Thomas H. Dunning, Sr., was initiated as an Honorary Teke at Beta-Eta Chapter at the University of Missouri – Rolla in 1967. He was recognized by the chapter for his numerous contributions and his initiation started a long line of father/son initiation teams in the chapter. Frater Dunning entered the Chapter Eternal in 2003. This scholarship was established by his family in honor of his strong commitment to TKE and education.

Timothy L. Taschwer Scholarship

Timothy L. Taschwer was named the first President/CEO of the TKE Foundation, serving from 1996 to 2005. He guided the TKE Leadership Academy program during the same period. This Knight of Apollo also served as Chapter Consultant and Vice President for Development for TKE. Initiated into Epsilon-Nu Chapter at the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point, he earned a degree in natural resources and economics. He served as a Province Officer at the international level, and as a Board of Advisor Chairman and Alumni Association Founder and President at the local level. He is recipient of the TKE Triangle and Key Leader Awards and received the Foundation Fraternity for Life Award in 2005. In 2013, Taschwer was honored with the highest award conferred in TKE, The Order of the Golden Eagle. He is a Life Loyal Teke and serves on the Foundation Advisory Council.

TKE Pride Servant Leadership Scholarship

Created by Past Grand Prytanis Mark C. Romig (2003-2005) in honor of his parents, Frater Jerry Romig and Janice Collins Romig, this award recognizes collegiate Tekes for their selfless service for the betterment of their chapter, campus and community through public service and/or chapter leadership. The award seeks to acknowledge a collegiate Teke who is a leader, not necessarily in title, but through action exhibiting the qualities of a true servant leader.

Farter Tommy was a devoted volunteer leader that embodied the words, “Love, Charity & Esteem.” Initiating into TKE at the Xi-Chi chapter in 1976, Frater Tommy won numerous awards throughout his TKE lifetime reflecting his dedication to educating our nation’s next generation of leaders. At Conclave 2019, Frater Tommy received Tau Kappa Epsilon’s highest honor by being selected to receive the “Order of the Golden Eagel” award. W. Allan Herzog Scholarship

A past member of the TKE Foundation Board of Directors, W. Allan Herzog was initiated a Teke at Nu Chapter at the University of California – Berkeley in 1949. Prior to becoming an investment advisor, he held positions as company president, financial officer and Certified Public Accountant. He has served on the board of directors of numerous governmental, civic and professional organizations, including the Financial Executives Institute. Frater Herzog was a recipient of the TKE Alumnus of the Year Award in 1989 and the Fraternity for Life Award in 2001. He serves on the Foundation Advisory Council.

William V. Muse Scholarship

A member and past chairman of the Board of Directors of the TKE Foundation, William V. Muse was initiated a Teke at Epsilon-Upsilon Chapter at Northwestern State University – Louisiana. He served on the Grand Council of Tau Kappa Epsilon from 1967 to 1979, culminating his service as Grand Prytanis. He is the recipient of the Alumnus of the Year Award, Order of the Golden Eagle Award, and the Foundation Fraternity for Life Award. A lifelong educator, Dr. Muse has served as chancellor of East Carolina University, Auburn University and the University of Akron. He is a Life Loyal Teke.
