Frater Chambers Honored for Philanthropic Efforts

NEWARK, NJ - Philanthropist and Frater Raymond Chambers of Theta-Zeta Chapter (pictured on left of Former President Bill Clinton) has received the top award from the National Conference on Citizenship for his leadership in global health and volunteerism.

Chambers was awarded the group's Citizen of the Year Award for launching Malaria No More, a campaign to end malaria deaths in Africa. At his urging, the White House sponsored a summit on the issue.

He also co-founded America's Promise -- the Alliance for Youth, a nationwide effort to increase high school graduation rates.

"Ray stays in the shadows of anonymity and works with humility," said John Bridgeland, former director of USA Freedom Corps and chairman of the national conference's advisory board. "But today, we are proud to bring his accomplishments to light on behalf of a grateful nation and world."

Chambers, a Newark native, made his fortune on Wall Street but never ventured far from his hometown. He has been a long- time supporter of the Newark Boys & Girls Club and behind-the-scenes player in Newark's civic affairs.
