Veterans Day 2015

Veterans Day 2015

On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, an armistice was declared between the Allied nations and Germany in the First World War, then known as "the Great War." Commemorated as Armistice Day beginning the following year, November 11th became a legal federal holiday in the United States in 1938. In the aftermath of World War II and the Korean War, Armistice Day became Veterans Day, a holiday dedicated to American veterans of all wars. While nearly a century has passed since the First World War, our respect and honor for the men and women who have proudly served their country is unwavering.

Today is an opportunity to honor veterans for their patriotism. As America celebrates Veterans Day and Canada celebrates Remembrance Day, we stand united in honoring the acts of selfless service from veterans—men and women who have gone to extraordinary lengths to protect our freedom and defend our values.

While the United States and Canada reserve November 11th to honor those who have served their country, our effort to honor all veterans must be as resolute as our commitment to defend our freedom.

Years ago, Tau Kappa Epsilon established the Order of the Shield as a way to acknowledge and recognize Fraters who engaged in defending peace and freedom by serving their country's armed forces through active, reserve or National Guard components. Acceptance to the Order of the Shield is not limited to those who served in the United States and Canadian forces.

In addition to recognizing those who have served their country, the Order promotes the establishment and awarding of a scholarship to a deserving college member who is currently serving, or has already meet his military obligation, in the armed forces of his country.

Tau Kappa Epsilon International Fraternity and the Offices of the Grand Chapter extends a heartfelt "Thank You" to all veterans and recognizes the men and women who have served in the United States and Canadian Armed Forces. We will never forget our solemn debt in the wake of your service protecting our freedom and defending our values.
