Frater Eyes Kentucky Derby Victory

Troutt's Super SaverCHRUCHILL DOWNS, Ky – Another Kentucky Derby victory is in the sights of Frater Kenny Troutt (Beta-Chi, Southern Illinois Univ.). His horse Super Saver holds 15-1 odds for the “most intense two minutes in sports.” The horse stamped himself as a legitimate Kentucky Derby prospect in his 2009 finale when he won the Kentucky Jockey Club at Churchill Downs. The Todd Pletcher-trained colt set the pace before drawing off by five lengths and showing a distinct fondness for the Derby surface.

Troutt’s WinStar Farms' homebred colt looks to give the Versailles, Kentucky based operation its second victory at the Run for the Roses. The first taste of victory was WinStar bred 2003 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Funny Cide. They was first represented in the Derby as an owner by Bluegrass Cat, who finished second behind Barbaro in 2006. WinStar has also been represented by Any Given Sunday (eighth) and Cowtown Cat (20th) in 2007, Colonel John (6th) and Court Vision (13th) in 2008, as well as Hold Me Back (12th), Advice (13th) and Mr. Hot Stuff (15th) last year.

Bill Casner, the chairman of the board of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association, galloped and trained horses before leaving the industry in 1979 to found Excel Communications with Frater Troutt. Casner, who resides in Flower Mound, Texas, returned to horse ownership in the 1990s before forming WinStar Farm with Troutt.

Super Saver in action. It’s going to be a great race on May 1st, so be sure to watch the action on NBC beginning at 4PM.
