Prepare for a Safe Semester

Risk ManagementWe all think, 'it won’t happen to us, that’s the other guys.' Unfortunately, this is not the case. It can and will happen to you if the proper precautions are not instituted. We are not asking you to stop all fun activities, but as you begin the year it is a good idea to take a look at the TKE Risk Management Guidelines and Crisis Communication Plan (Don’t have one? Email us). You can also form your Crisis Team and review the Incident Report Form (both included in the CCP).

There are several times during the year when your risks go up. Those are starting school, initiation, winter break, spring break, finals and summer break. You can look at all the numbers, but we don’t want your chapter or you to become a statistic. Here are some quick items to help you start the process.

Prepare for a Safe Semester
  • Know the potential hazards of your house/ apartment/ room and your campus.
  • Distribute your college address to parents, family members and others, including any relatives or family friends that live closer to you than your primary family. In the event of an emergency it may be a life saver to have all of your contact information, and the contact information of people you spend time with available to others that could help you.
  • Plan your routes to and from class in the safest areas.
  • Keep a medical sheet with you identifying your blood type, allergies and other information in case of an emergency.
  • Keep with you a list of emergency phone numbers, email addresses and text numbers that you can access quickly.
  • Most importantly READ the Risk Management Guidelines and Crisis Communication Plan. And don’t forget to go over them with the rest of the chapter.

Doing these things and educating yourself on what TKE has available will help you tackle difficult issues. As always, if you need more information or have questions, TKE is an email or phone call away.
