Frater Heads Back to the Derby

The greatest two minutes in sports will once again feature a horse owned by Frater Kenny Troutt (Beta-Chi, Southern Illinois Univ.-Carbondale) and WinStar Farms. The 7-1 favorite, Gemologist looks to earn the first part of the Triple Crown Saturday at the 138th Kentucky Derby.

Many experts find it difficult to bet against the son of two-time Breeders' Cup Classic winner Tiznow. He's currently undefeated and seems to be getting faster with each race. In his two competitions this year, Gemologist was able to stalk the early leaders before making his winning move as he came off the far turn. Pacing himself until he turns on the speed bodes well in a high-intensity race like the Run for the Roses.

Some horses fire off the line, but lose steam towards the end of the race which is why it makes him the early favorite to earn Frater Troutt another win on one of the biggest horse racing stages out there. SuperSaver took the glory in 2010 for WinStar and now Gemologist is poised to take them back to the winner's circle.

Frater Troutt is a native of Mt. Vernon, Illinois. He has been a horseman for more than 20 years and an entrepreneur most of his life. He established his first horse farm, Landview, in Eastern Nebraska in the early 1980's. In 1988 he founded Excel Communications, a long distance telephone service company, which integrated the growing demand for telecommunications service with the unprecedented power of relationship marketing. As Founder and Chairman of Excel, his innovative business and marketing strategies resulted in the meteoric rise of the corporation and it's subsequent success as a publicly traded enterprise in 1996.

Currently Mr. Troutt serves on the Board of Trustees of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association and on the Board of Directors of the Breeders' Cup. He resides in Dallas with his wife Lisa and their three children.
