TKE CEO Headed to the White House

Frater Steven A. RamosINDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - United States President Barack Obama is hosting a select group of educational leaders and students at the White House this week. Frater Steven A. Ramos, the CEO of Tau Kappa Epsilon, will be helping advise The President's Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence. This particular niche is focused on the Latino community and helping to not only encourage continuing education, but inspiring this segment to reach higher.

"It is an honor to represent TKE as a participant on White House Education Initiatives,” said Frater Ramos. “The two day session at the White House listening and interacting with the Nation’s experts is thrilling.”

The Commission will advise the President and the Secretary in the developing, implementing, and coordinating educational programs and initiatives at the Department and other agencies to improve educational opportunities and outcomes for Hispanics of all ages. In addition, they seek to increase the participation of the Hispanic community and Hispanic-Serving Institutions in the Department's programs and in education programs at other agencies. They also work to engage the philanthropic, business, nonprofit, and education communities in a national dialogue regarding the mission and objectives of this order by establishing partnerships with public, private, philanthropic, and nonprofit stakeholders to meet the mission and policy objectives of the order.

“Nationally 1 in 4 students in elementary school are Latino. By the end of the decade it is estimated that number will be 1 in 3. These are stunning facts. America has its educational challenges, but the world’s best schools are still in America.  We need more of our youth to take advantage.”

Nationally the drop-out rate of Latinos is close to 50%. The number of Latinos going to college ranges from 3-4%, depending on whose numbers you use. With 15% of the population Latino, only 3% attending college and a 50% drop out rate, you can easily see that in 10 years America is going to be in trouble. This commission is working to reverse this trend and, with leaders like Frater Ramos, the possibilities to do so are great.
